How to Try to Improve SEO on Shopify Without Being an Expert

Starting SEO practices on a new website can be challenging due to its complexity. When you lack experience and the budget to hire a professional SEO, the only option left is to learn on your own. That’s why we’ve launched this section of our blog called SEO for Shopify.

We want to guide you through a series of content that we will create weekly so that you can improve your SEO within your Shopify store without struggling.

If you’re interested in a topic that you don’t find here but need help with, just leave your comment, and we will respond to your request.

This guide has been prepared by our SEO expert from our agency located in Venezuela, David, who has extensive experience in increasing organic traffic for digital stores using Shopify. If you’re interested in discussing this further, we have provided his LinkedIn link here.

Orienting Shopify to Improve SEO: Experiences from the Agency According to David Dysart Team

If you’re here, I assume you don’t have much experience in SEO, and it’s difficult to create content that helps all levels of expertise. Today, I’ll start with a beginner’s guide for those using Shopify who know very little about SEO, but I will continue to expand the content in this section to assist you. Additionally, feel free to leave a question if you have any doubts.

Your website is live, so what should you do to improve your Shopify site’s SEO if you’re not getting any visits?

I don’t want to waste time explaining basic SEO concepts at this point. Instead, I’ll provide you with links that you can visit to help you on your journey to increasing your Shopify’s organic traffic.

The foundation for creating a good e-commerce site is the structure of your content, URLs, or products. Without a solid foundation, it will take longer to improve your site’s SEO. A well-structured website on Shopify starts with collections, or in other words, categories, which is different from WordPress (in case you’ve had a site on that CMS).

Create a category structure that is easy for Google’s algorithm to identify. To help you understand this, we’ll clearly separate the categories to better position that Shopify store.

Example of How We Could Create a Good Category Structure That Works for SEO and Shopify

For this example, let’s imagine we have a website called “Doggyfood” that sells dog food and cat food. But when you visit your site, the algorithm detects that you only have the Home Page, and there are no categories.

What happens at this point with Google is the following question: “Which of the three types of products I see here should I show?” In other words, there is no clear intent. Google cannot detect if you want to rank for dog food with your Shopify store or for cat food.

In this example, you can see how I’ve separated the different types of hoop earrings through collections to make it easier for Google to read.

In the bottom right corner, you’ll find our contact info. We want to connect more closely with our readers and help them improve their SEO on their store.

What solution could we implement in these cases to try to optimize the SEO for our Shopify store?

The easiest solution is to assign a URL for each search intent. I recommend creating a dedicated URL for dog food and a URL for cat food. You could leave the homepage for the brand or a general term like “pet food store.”

This way, the structure of our site would look like this:

HOME (First level)

  • Dog Food (Second level)
  • Cat Food (Second level)

With this in place, you’ll have a good start to increasing your chances of success. Of course, this is just a tiny part of what SEO is and everything I apply across different CMSs for ranking.

You should apply this to your Shopify e-commerce site for all categories, and then delve into other basic practices that we’ll cover throughout this season. But since not all the content is available right now, I’ll leave you with some resources that you can use to continue learning about general SEO.
